Congonhas impressiona pela riqueza do período barroco e do estilo rococó. Na Praça da Basílica encontra-se o Santuário de Bom Jesus do Matozinhos, uma obra inspirada em santuários portugueses. Entretanto, a versão brasileira conta com uma das obras maestras de Antônio Francisco Lisboa (mais conhecido como Aleijadinho), os doze profetas esculpidos em pedra sabão além das seis capelas com os passos da paixão, tornando a cidade um dos principais destinos turísticos do Estado.
